Urgent Appeal: 19-Year-Old Solaya Battles Severe Epilepsy and Deep Emotional Distress
At just 19 years old, L’ingénieux Jamaïca Solaya is living with a condition that gives her no relief.
Her fight against severe epilepsy began at the age of 11.
It started with a first seizure—sudden, violent, and impossible for a child to understand.
Neurological follow-up was immediately initiated. She was first treated under pediatric care and later transferred to neurology as she grew older.
The years passed, but the illness did not.
At first, Solaya suffered two to three seizures a day.
Despite treatment, the frequency gradually increased.
Doctors adjusted her medication repeatedly. Depakine. Then levetiracetam. Then back to Depakine with higher doses.
The protocols changed. So did the hopes.
But the seizures continued.
From three a day, they increased to four. Then five.
Today, there are times when the episodes occur almost without interruption.
In the past, the seizures only happened during sleep.
Now, they can strike at any moment—while sitting, walking, or even in the middle of a conversation.
Every outing has become a risk.
Every day is filled with uncertainty.
Over time, other symptoms have also appeared:
- frequent memory loss
- repeated forgetfulness
- severe eye pain
- intense migraines
Hospital visits have become regular.
Emergency injections to stop prolonged seizures are now part of her daily reality.
But beyond the physical illness, another struggle has taken hold.
Psychological exhaustion. Isolation. The feeling of never being able to live like others her age.
Solaya has attempted to end her life twice.
A deeply alarming sign.
A silent distress that goes far beyond the medical condition itself.
For her mother, every day is a battle.
“Even if I have to take her to the hospital every single day, I will do it. I believe that one day my daughter will be able to live a normal life,” she shares, her voice filled with hope despite the exhaustion.
Today, her condition requires an in-depth specialized medical evaluation, followed by targeted optimization of her anti-epileptic treatment.
The objective is clear:
to understand why the seizures continue despite years of medication and to establish a treatment protocol better suited to her complex condition.
This specialized care comes at a significant cost that the family cannot bear alone.
